Smithereens Album Covers
Typography, Print, Book Design

CONTEXT & BRIEF /
For 8 weeks, create 9 album covers every week based on a prompt. This process incorporates contrast, space, asymmetry, hierarchy, legibility, alignments, and structures. The poster triptych is based around George Kusunoki Miller, professionally known as singer-songwriter Joji. From left to right, the posters show typography in different structures, which include typographic poetry, a tour poster, and an artist tribute.
CONCEPT /
I wanted to capture that his release of "Smithereens" was a culmination of all the sounds he's been working on throughout his years as a growing artist. There is heartbreak, tragedy, and pain being conveyed. The goal was to express them through abstract alterations in letterforms and illustrations.
PROCESS /
The exploration of abstraction, movement, texture, and illustration, was to express the narrative of growth when passing through grief.

Include artist name, album title, track list, numbers, and time lengths.

Use same typeface and for every cover, add a line element all they way to nine.

Use the same typeface and for every cover, design each set of 3 layouts, adding a shape element.

Design layouts with a mixture of serif and sans-serif typefaces being interchhanged as headliner and body.

Each layout must contain 1 color. Color can be an abstract element,
a visual treatment, or a letterform.

Each layout must contain an experimental concept.
Explore deconstructed, distressed, analog, 3D, etc.

Each layout must execute type as image/texture to conceptually
promote a narrative.
